“Los Angeles is blessed to have a group like this in our midst”
– Tom Schnabel, KCRW
IIn 2010, Aditya Prakash founded the Aditya Prakash Ensemble. The group’s unique collaboration took root during the members’ ethnomusicology studies at UCLA, where their horizons for new cross-cultural musical explorations were vastly expanded. The group of imaginative young musicians, while bridging seemingly disparate styles of music, create a boldly innovative and dynamic blend of the deep-rooted Indian ragas and rhythms with the sounds of jazz harmony, brass instrumentation and hip hop-infused beats. They have established a space where the sounds of Karnatik and jazz intertwine in an engaging, contemporary way — a musical dialogue that is eminently accessible and playful yet powerful.
Aditya Prakash Ensemble has released three albums — The Hidden (2012) and MARA (2016) and Diaspora Kid (2020) which was in part sponsored by the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA, and released by Ropeadope Records.
Diaspora Kid garnered praise from Songlines, KCRW and was featured in the top 15 albums on the Transglobal World Music Chart in May 2020. Aditya Prakash Ensemble was selected by the acclaimed festival showcase, GlobalFEST, to perform a NPR Tiny Desk concert in 2021.
The Ensemble has performed at notable venues across the globe, including the Kennedy Center’a Millennium Stage in Washington DC, Esplanade Theatres by the Bay in Singapore, The New Parks Festival (a six-city India tour), and at such prestigious Los Angeles venues as The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, The Ford, The Getty Center and The Skirball Center.
